By Alisa Xu · Product Manager, Ningbo Torchmark Hardware Co., Ltd. · LinkedIn Most drain callouts are not dramatic. They are a metre or two of hair, soap scum and grease sitting inside a 32–40 mm trap, and the plunger cannot reach past the bend. A plumber who carries the right auger clears it in minutes; one who carries the wrong auger either cannot reach it or scratches the fixture on the way in. For a distributor, the practical question is which auger format covers which call — and this page answers it by blockage, not by model number.

Hand-turn, drill-powered or drum?
Hand-turn (JQ-004, 4.5 m and 6 m) is the entry spec. It is quiet, needs no power, and is enough for a basin or shower trap — which is the majority of domestic calls. It is also the format a homeowner can be sold without a demonstration. Drill-powered capability (JQ-003, 6 m and 7.6 m) matters once the user is a contractor doing several calls a day. The same tool still hand-cranks when there is no drill to hand, which is why it is usually the faster-moving SKU in a professional channel. Our guide to choosing between manual and drill-powered augers goes through that trade-off in detail. Drum format (manual drum auger) keeps the cable contained between calls and gives a controlled feed-and-retrieve. Cable diameter (6 mm or 8 mm) and working length (5 m, 7.5 m or 10 m) are configurable, so one model family covers bathroom, kitchen and light commercial work. What these tools must not be used for
State this clearly in your catalogue copy and you will avoid most of the warranty claims in this category: JQ-003 and JQ-004 are not suitable for toilets, because the cable can mark the ceramic bowl. Two further limits belong in writing with the customer — cable length does not by itself establish a compatible pipe-diameter range, and no drill-speed limit is specified, so do not claim automatic feed or a maximum rpm.
The spare parts line nobody opens — and should
Cables wear, kink and get replaced. A plumber whose auger cable has a permanent set will buy a replacement long before they buy another tool. Opening a spare-parts line — cables, cutter heads, retrieval hooks — turns a one-off tool sale into a repeat line, and it is the cheapest way to add margin to this category. See drain auger spare cables and heads. Building the plumbing assortment
- One hand-turn auger as the price leader — JQ-004 at 4.5 m.
- One drill-capable auger as the volume line — JQ-003 at 6 m or 7.6 m.
- One drum auger for the trade end — configurable at 6 mm or 8 mm, and the one that makes the range look professional.
- Spare cables and heads — sized to the models you actually sell.
