When a cable needs replacing
- Flat spots. Where the cable has been crushed — usually by being forced round a bend it should not have been forced round. A flat spot catches and can score the pipe.
- Rough or burred end. This is what scratches ceramic. The end finish is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.
Heads: what each one is for
- Bulb / drop head — the general-purpose head for feeling the blockage and working through soft matting.
- Cutter head — for harder build-up, grease and scale. Use with care in older pipe.
- Retrieval hook — for pulling out a solid object rather than breaking it up.
- Grease head — a larger surface for kitchen-line grease.

How to stock the spare line
- One cable per machine model you sell, in the length that model ships with — the exact replacement is what a customer asks for first.
- Heads as a small assortment — bulb, cutter and retrieval hook cover nearly every call.
- Drum cables in 6 mm and 8 mm if you sell the drum auger, since that machine is configurable and customers will want both.
- Consolidate into the tool order — spare freight is the margin killer in this category.
