A rivet nut tool is the hardware; the insert is the consumable. Every joint the customer sets uses one, which makes inserts the single most predictable repeat line in the fastening category. Mandrels are the second — they wear, they get stripped, and a tool without a usable mandrel is a tool out of service. This page covers both, with the fitment detail that decides whether an order works or gets rejected.

Send the insert you intend to run and we confirm the matching mandrel and nosepiece on the quotation — this is the check that prevents a rejected lot.

The two numbers that decide whether the insert works

Hole diameter. Drill oversize and the insert spins in the panel. Drill undersize and it will not seat. The correct hole is a property of the insert, not of the thread name, so it must be confirmed against the actual part you will run.
Grip range. The same M6 insert comes in several grip ranges. Specifying the thread without the parent-panel thickness is the most common specification error in this category, and it produces an order that looks correct on paper and is unusable on the bench.
Both are covered in the rivet nut size chart, which we recommend sending to customers with every first quotation.

Material choice: what it costs and what it buys

  • Aluminium inserts — the lightest and kindest to the tool; the default for thin sheet and for panels where weight matters.
  • Steel inserts — the volume choice for general fabrication, with higher thread strength than aluminium.
  • Stainless steel inserts — for corrosive or wash-down environments. Confirm material per application; setting force is higher and mandrel wear is faster.

How to stock the consumable line

  1. Inserts in the sizes you already sell tools for — M4, M5, M6 and M8 cover most automotive and HVAC ducting work.
  1. At least one spare mandrel per size sold — the part that keeps the tool in service.
  1. Blind rivets as the adjacent line — the same customer, the same van, a different job.
  1. Carded assortments for retail — an assortment box is the single easiest upsell in this category.

Ordering

Minimum order quantity differs by SKU and finish, and small-batch private-label runs are supported. Private-label fastener labels, tool colour, logo marking and instruction language are all available. Send the thread sizes, materials and quantities and we confirm MOQ and lead time together.

Frequently asked questions

Do inserts come with the tool?

The LR-HR-09 kit ships with assorted rivet nuts. Inserts are otherwise quoted separately, by size and material.

Is M3–M12 a compatibility guarantee?

No. It lists the mandrel and nosepiece sizes catalogued for the tool. Insert behaviour changes with material, parent-panel thickness, grip range and hole tolerance — verify on a sample.

Can you supply inch threads?

Yes, by agreement. State the thread system with your RFQ.
