Drain Cleaners & Augers

JQ-014 6 mm Hand Drain Spring Auger (0.9 m / 1.8 m)

6 mm hand spring auger in 0.9 m and 1.8 m, 1.2 mm wire, 0.1-0.2 kg. Clears hair, food residue and mud from sink, basin and bath traps. OEM packaging, paid samples.

What the JQ-014 is

The JQ-014 is a small hand-held spring auger for sink, basin, bath and shower drains. It is a coiled spring cable with a fixed grip at one end and a corkscrew tip at the other, sold in two lengths. The catalogue describes the job the same way we would describe it to a buyer: it clears hair, vegetable dregs, food residue, mud and other soft material out of a short trap run.
It is the smallest tool in our drain cleaning programme at 6 mm cable diameter, which is the size that fits a 32 mm or 40 mm waste pipe without scraping the wall. Anything larger belongs to a drum auger, and anything longer belongs to a cable machine or a rod set. Getting that boundary right is the difference between a tool that earns repeat orders and one that comes back bent.

Both item numbers share the same 6 mm cable and the same 1.2 mm wire. The only variable is length, and the weight difference between them is 0.1 kg. That detail matters more than it looks: at 0.1 kg the JQ-014-1 is light enough to hang on a retail pegboard card without the card bowing, which is why this item is usually bought as a household or counter display product rather than a contractor tool.

Where a 6 mm spring auger works, and where it does not

The honest answer is that the JQ-014 covers a narrow but very common set of jobs. It works on a slow kitchen sink, a bath that drains reluctantly, hair in a shower trap, a basin in a rented flat, a garage utility sink. All of those are short horizontal or vertical runs behind a trap, and all of them are blockages a householder will try to clear before calling anyone.
It does not work, and should not be sold as working, on a main stack, a long horizontal branch, a root intrusion, or a toilet pan. A 6 mm spring pushed into a stack will coil back on itself rather than travel, and the buyer will interpret that as a faulty tool. If your customer is a plumber rather than a householder, the correct starting points are the JQ-009 drum auger range for 7 to 10 mm cable up to 10 m, or the JQ-002A and JQ-002B hand drum augers where a closed drum is preferred over an open one.
For a toilet specifically, the correct tool is the JQ-006 toilet auger with vinyl guard. Its vinyl sleeve exists for one reason: to stop a steel cable from marking the porcelain on the way in. Selling a bare spring auger for that job is how a retailer ends up with a damaged-goods claim instead of a repeat sale.

JQ-014-1 or JQ-014-2: which length do you stock

The 0.9 m item covers the trap and the first metre of pipe behind it, which is where the great majority of household blockages sit. The 1.8 m item reaches the bend and a short horizontal run past the trap, which is where a blockage that has been pushed back once or twice tends to settle.
For a retail assortment the usual split is to lead with the 0.9 m and carry the 1.8 m as a secondary facing, because the customer who needs 1.8 m is usually the customer who has already tried and failed with a shorter tool. For a plumbing merchant's counter, the ratio often reverses: the trade buys the longer length first because a call-back is more expensive than the extra 0.1 kg of tool.
Both are packed together easily. Two item numbers at 0.1 kg and 0.2 kg means a carton of mixed lengths cubes almost identically to a carton of one, so a buyer can test both without committing a container to a single SKU. Our guide to planning a drain auger range for wholesale buyers sets out the same logic across the whole programme.

How it sits against JQ-015, JQ-020 and JQ-021

Four items in our range are 5 mm or 6 mm hand tools, and buyers reasonably ask why all four exist. The difference is the working end and the packaging, not the cable:
Item
Cable
Working end
Typical buyer
JQ-014
6 mm, 0.9 / 1.8 m
Corkscrew spring, single grip
Retail and trade counter
JQ-021
5 mm, 0.9 m
Corkscrew spring, grip at both ends
Tight bends, restricted access
JQ-015
5 mm, 0.8 / 3 m
Brush head
Trade counter, maintenance
JQ-020
5 / 6 mm, 5–15 m
Corkscrew spring, blister card
Retail chain, pegboard
JQ-022
Bare cable, no handle
None
Trade consumable
The practical distinction is the brush. JQ-015 scrubs a pipe wall after the blockage is out; JQ-014 pulls the blockage out in the first place. Shops that sell both usually find the pair moves together, because a customer who has just cleared a slow drain is receptive to the tool that keeps it clear. If you need a longer reach for the same 5 mm work, the JQ-025 drain rod set at 9 m is the next step up, and cable sizes across the range are compared in our drain auger cable size chart.

Packing, private label and mixed orders

Carton quantity, minimum order per item number and mixed-container ratios are commercial terms and are quoted per enquiry rather than printed on a page that may go stale. What can be stated from the catalogue is the shipping weight: 0.1 kg for the 0.9 m item and 0.2 kg for the 1.8 m item, before carton, card or bag.
For private label the questions a buyer actually needs answered are about presentation, not the cable: whether the item ships in a poly bag, a printed carton or a hanging card, whether the barcode is printed or applied as a label, and which language panel can be changed per market. Those are answerable per order, and where a detail has to be checked against a physical sample before you commit, we will say so instead of confirming it from an email. Paid samples are the normal route.
If you are building a household maintenance assortment rather than a plumbing range, the JQ-027A and JQ-027B pump drain plungers cover the blockage type that does not need a cable at all, and the whole category is indexed from our drain augers hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is the spring on the JQ-014 replaceable?

On this item the spring is fixed into the grip and is not sold as a separate service part. If replaceable cable matters to your market, the drum units are the right purchase: spare cable is a stocked line in our drain auger spare cables range. Confirm the construction on the exact item number before promising a customer anything.

Will a 6 mm cable scratch a plastic waste pipe?

A 6 mm spring is sized for 32 mm and 40 mm waste pipe and is the normal tool for that job. The end that causes damage is not the cable but the tip, which is why the auger should be fed in by hand and turned rather than driven in with force. Where the pipe is accessible and visible, a visual check before and after is worth more than any general claim.

Can it be used on a toilet?

No. A toilet needs a tool with a guard and a bend, which is what the JQ-006 is for. The JQ-014 is for waste pipe behind a trap, not for a pan.

What is the difference between JQ-014-1 and JQ-014-2?

Length only. Both are 6 mm cable with a 1.2 mm wire. The 0.9 m item weighs 0.1 kg and the 1.8 m item 0.2 kg.

Is it suitable for a commercial kitchen drain?

For a short trap run, yes. For a grease-loaded line or a floor drain feeding a long run, no — that work needs a drum machine or a rod set, and a 6 mm spring will either coil or come back coated in grease that the next user then pushes further in.

What do I need to send you for a quotation?

The item numbers and quantities, the packaging you want (bag, carton or card), the market you are selling into, and whether you need private label. With those four things we can quote without a second round of questions.
